Rudy's 12-point contract with America contains some commendable positions, but his point regarding reducing our dependence on foreign oil leaves out the most obvious, inexpensive, accessible strategy, which is removing the obstacles to accessing the plentiful oil which we already have. We need leaders who will take on the environmental extremist lobby on this issue and open ANWR to drilling, expand our ability to explore offshore reserves, and in other ways develop our existing resources. Development of alternative energy resources is fine, but they would already have been more fully developed if they were cost-effective, and any benefits of government investment in them involve delays and uncertain outcomes. Certainly we can extract the oil we need in a manner that is environmentally responsible and we can do that in a cost-effective manner now.
